1. Not testing the water regularly

Weekly checks of the pH, chlorine and alkalinity are essential. Unbalanced water can cause irritation and damage equipment. Prolonged imbalance also encourages the growth of algae and bacteria, making the water cloudy and unfit for swimming. Consider using test strips or an electronic tester for accurate analysis and quickly adjust levels if necessary. 2. Neglecting to clean the filter A dirty filter reduces the effectiveness of filtration and promotes the growth of algae. Clean it regularly to ensure crystal-clear water. Sand filters should be backwashed every two weeks, while cartridge filters should be rinsed with clean water at least once a week. A build-up of debris in the filter can also increase pressure and cause the pump to malfunction.

3. Leaving the water level too low

An insufficient water level prevents proper circulation and can damage the pump. Check that it is always in the middle of the skimmers. If the water is too low, the pump may draw in air and overheat, leading to costly breakdowns. Remember to compensate for evaporation and splashing by adding water regularly, especially in summer. 4. Using too many chemicals An excess of chlorine or algaecide can unbalance the water and damage the liner. Follow the dosages indicated for each treatment. An overdose of chlorine can irritate the skin and eyes, while an excess of anti-algae can cause unpleasant foam. Using incompatible products can also cause undesirable chemical reactions. It is essential to always read the labels carefully and to space out the addition of products.

5. Neglecting to clean the sides and bottom

Simply passing a net over the surface is not enough. Brush the sides and use a pool vacuum to remove impurities. Limescale deposits and algae easily adhere to the walls, especially in the corners and on the edges. Weekly cleaning with a suitable brush prevents the formation of stains and extends the life of the lining.

6. Forgetting to properly winterise your pool

Improper winterisation can cause cracks and frost damage. Follow a suitable protocol to protect your pool in winter. It is essential to lower the water level, add a winterising product and protect the filtration equipment. Active winterising can also be a solution, by maintaining minimal filtration to prevent the water from stagnating.

7. Allowing the filtration to run for too short a time. The filtration time should correspond to approximately half the water temperature (e.g. 14 hours for water at 28°C). Insufficient filtration encourages the proliferation of algae. A pump that runs too infrequently does not allow the water to be treated effectively and allows impurities to accumulate. Remember to adapt the filtration time according to the weather conditions and the level of use of the pool. 8. Not checking the seals and equipment Worn seals or a poorly maintained pump can cause leaks and a loss of efficiency. Carry out regular checks. The seals on the skimmers, nozzles and pump must be monitored and changed if necessary to avoid significant water losses. A tiny leak can quickly lead to overconsumption and damage to surrounding structures.

9. Adding products at the wrong time

Some products, such as chlorine, should be added in the evening to prevent them from evaporating quickly in the sun. It is also advisable to wait until the pump is running to ensure that the treatment is properly distributed. Adding chlorine or pH correctors in the middle of the day reduces their effectiveness and can lead to rapid imbalances.

10. Do not cover the pool

A tarpaulin helps to limit evaporation and prevents impurities from entering. This is key to reducing maintenance. A thermal cover also maintains the water temperature and reduces energy consumption if you use a pool heater. In winter, an opaque cover prevents the proliferation of algae by limiting light.
